I grew up in an Air Force family moving to different military bases around the world every few years. It was exciting to be a kid living in Germany and Japan as we experienced a rich variety of cultures. Stateside assignments brought us to Sacramento, the upper peninsula of Michigan, and Dayton, Ohio. We even spent a few years in Newfoundland as my father worked "on the mountain" in facilities connected with the old Defense Early Warning (DEW) Line, designed to identify and monitor any Soviet bomber activity near our borders.
Graduating from high school in 1972 at Dayton, I elected to attend the University of Notre Dame. After earning a degree in American Studies, I entered the Army in 1976 as a Second Lieutenant in the Armor Branch.
